Yes, it does have the same basic premise as Jumanji (both books were written by the same guy, after all!) — board game wreaks havoc on innocent children who happen to have a few problems other than an insane board game. But Zathura is about 100 times better. First of all, the characters aren’t overshadowed by 1) titanic special effects and 2) huge name actors who seize over the movie. This is a movie with heart, and a broad contrivance to commence the holiday season, I might add. Remember how surprisingly qualified the fun, holiday movie Elf was? This is like that, and both are directed by Jon Favreau. This film does a apt job of making an implausible set seem plausible, while giving the characters some realness.

Two young boys, Walter (age 10) and Danny (age 6) are constantly fighting. Danny fair wants someone to play with. Walter could care less. Their father (played by Tim Robbins) is newly divorced, which only adds to this family’s stress. There’s also an older sister, Lisa, who sleeps until 2 pm and doesn’t care about anyone but herself. When Danny finds a mysterious game in the basement called Zathura, he begs Walter to play. Walter doesn’t feel like it, so Danny begins to play anyway. On his first move, the game spits out a card that reads, “Meteor Shower. Acquire evasive action.” Danny can’t really read, and it’s not until their living room is being pelleted with meteors that the boys buy evasive action. Danny runs in circles screaming. Eventually, when the house if floating in the middle of region, they rescue a stranded astronaut (played wonderfully by Dax Shephard!), who reveals that he also once played the game and that’s why he’s a stranded astronaut. There’s actually a twist in this movie about the astronaut, which I totally didn’t survey coming. I had to justify it to my exiguous cousins because they didn’t really accept it, but they unruffled conception it was frigid.
In the words of a three year obsolete movie critic prodigy, this movie is “really really cold, kinda scary, but really frosty.” She even said it was better than Jumanji! And if you can’t bewitch my word for it, steal hers. This is a very sweet movie that explores not only the far reaches of region, but the relationship that siblings have with one another. Very top-notch and PERFECT for kids (except a couple direct words, nothing to really anxiety about though), I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this movie!!
I took my 5 1/2 year-old nephew, a kindergartener, to peek “Zathura”. I expected Michael, as someone who’s been exposed to a dependable diet of Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and Spider-Man, as well as to Peanuts, the Wiggles and the Muppets, to indulge in the sci-fi elements. Predictably, he spent the second half of the film cowering in his seat, latched onto both of my arms… and he walked out of the theater at the extinguish loving every little of it, completely jazzed about the experience. We spent most of the 10-minute roam abet talking about outer area, aliens, and how it was all fiction, and he drew a lot of pictures of aliens (most of whom looked like Muppets) once he got home.

As others here have said, the language stale by the two boys in the movie (10 and 7) is a puny disconcerting. However, they employ the same words I was exposed to at that age, and comparable to the language Michael is exposed to at home. Michael didn’t poke out of the theater cursing, so that portion of the movie did not bother me.
The fright factor is somewhat intense. The predictable monsters don’t demonstrate up until the final two reels and aren’t what I’d call unsightly, although that’s the piece of the movie that had Michael cowering. There’s also a broad clunky ’50s-style robot, but when you accumulate out who provides the recount you’ll realize that this wasn’t meant to be gross — not if anything to say about it Jon Favreau had. The images of the house floating through place, alongside asteroids and suns, is what will really stand out for the younger viewer.
This is basically a kids’ movie directed by Jon Favreau, so naturally it’s going to seem weird. Based on the uncomfortably short shorts musty by the teenage girl in the movie (and she has nothing else to do at all), I’d say the target audience is boys 9 to 12. There’s also a surprisingly deep state twist intelligent another game player that the boys meet as their house drifts through position. I had anxiety explaining that to my nephew, although his grandmother didn’t understand it either.
My final verdict is that it’s wonderful to occupy a smaller child (6-ish) to this movie, and they will not recall anything negative away from the experience. It’s no loss if you manufacture them wait another three years before seeing it, though.

“Ginger Snaps” takes the primitive cautionary fable of Miniature Red Riding and turns it on its furry ear. Instead of Lon Chaney Jr. howling at the moon and chasing unpleasant unsuspecting girls through the woods – enter the Fitzgerald sisters, Ginger and Brigitte (Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins) two slightly morbid, teenage sisters entering puberty who are about to experience “the curse,” and set a whole original funny lycanthropic slide on the phrase “that time of month.” Ginger has “the bite” save on her by a werewolf while walking through the woods with her sister. She then begins to experience “the change” mighty to the apprehension of her younger sister Brigitte. Ginger begins experiencing cramps, ill temper, hair in unique places, and a unusual found “taste” for boys grand to the terror of Brigitte who must mask her sister’s secret, dapper up the mess, and score a draw to befriend destroy the dreadful curse before Ginger “snaps” again!
“Ginger Snaps” is a alarm at it’s best. The film benefits greatly by a strong cast, particularly Perkins and Isabelle as the Fitzgerald sisters, Kris Lemche as a dope dealing, knight in intellectual armor/love interest, and Mimi Rogers – who is a exact hoot playing a well meaning but ineffectual “Beaver Cleaver” house mom trying to assist her teenage daughters deal with the trials of puberty.

Though Karen Walton and John Fawcett’s script was written tongue in cheek – the film has many genuinely horrific moments. There is more than enough blood, gore and entrails here to support any bonafide apprehension fan jubilant. That being said, because this Canadian film production had a tight budget, it relies primarily on acting, atmosphere and suspense building to shriek the scares – probably a plus rather than a minus. Our lycanthrope is seen only in glimpses a la “Alien” until come the destroy of the film. Thankfully, the makeup and special effects it does utilize are innovative and decently done.
Director John Hawcett does a sparkling job creating a unlit chilling atmosphere. He moves the area at a marvelous prance, deftly interweaving moments of dread and humour. Though the scares advance expeditiously and frequent, Fawcett wisely takes the time to give us glimpses into the amusingly macabre life and relationships of the Fitzgerald sisters. Their site may be astounding and silly, but the Fitzgeralds, though misfits, are in many ways average teens, dealing with everyday teenage problems (problems with parents, teachers, peers, bullies, boys, etc.) and thus map empathy from the audience. The gritty dialogue and snapshots of high school life befriend to underline this realism and contribute to the viewer’s willing suspension of disbelief.
The only set where I felt the film didn’t quite work was the ending which seemed cliché when compared to the innovativeness of earlier parts of the film. I won’t go into any in depth criticism and spoil it for those who haven’t seen the film, but suffice it to say that perhaps the reason for this may have been that it was written with a sequel in mind (”Ginger Snaps” ultimately became a trilogy) .
As a caution, though definitely not gratuitous, some may feel that the language, gore, nudity and explicit sexuality is over the top.
Though not perfect, “Ginger Snaps” is level-headed the most innovative horrifying part of lycanthropic lunacy to arrive down the pike in decades. I highly recommend it to fans of the genre. “Ginger Snaps” is a howling expedient time!

i cherish the entire series of ginger snap movies but this one has to be my fav mainly because of the oh so adorable and astonishing actor kris lemche <3<3<3…ahhh:DD But for the terrific epic line. The actors are absolutley extraordinary and i could notice this over and over.

Having grown rather tired of this fall’s onslaught of violent R-rated films, this movie is a welcome change and it’s better than you might judge.

Of course, there is nothing recent about this film. We have another action actor who wants to note he is something more than that. We’ve experienced this when Arnold went from The Terminator to being a Kindergarten Cop, when Clint Eastwood finish being Dirty Harry to become Every Which Scheme but Loose, and Vin Diesel gave up being The Mercurial and the Angry to being The Pacifier. Now Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wants us to forget his action hero station for a more family obliging guy in “The Game Notion” by Disney.
This film has all the passe “fish out of water” cliches you can imagine and laughable humor that is a staple in all Disney live action films; however, most are forgivable here. The “fish out of water” element is handled well-enough although very predictable. As the characters grow, it is also quite touching. I understanding the humor was of the “hit and miss” variety. Miss: child lost in bubble bath. Hit: allergy to cinnamon. I have to say though in all fairness that the hits are hysterical and overshadow the misses (as annoying as they are) .

The situation is relatively simple in that a self-obsessed football hero is suddenly saddled with a child he never knew he had; however, and I won’t spoil it, there are some very bright twists to this site up that are not as predictable as most of the other elements in this film. Most character in this film are stereotypes that don’t development and, quite frankly, don’t need to. It’s The Rock’s character that needs to grow and he does and does so in a surprisingly believable manner.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been a better actor than he’s been given credit for being. I feel powerful the same plan about Vin Diesel. Both of these fresh action stars have proven themselves in a number of films and with both now having ventured into family comedy, they are growing as actors. The Rock in this film is really quite a surprise in that we learn that not only can he have a tune nicely, he does a resplendent assume on Elvis’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, but he is also an accomplished enough actor to wail on cue. Yup, you read that upright! It is not a digital effect; he actually cries on cue without a demolish or cutaway in the engage to add fraudulent tears. I was rather impressed with that.
I was also impressed with the surprising laughable performance turned in by Kyra Sedgwick (TV’s “The Closer, and A.K.A. Mrs. Kevin Bacon) . She isn’t over-the-top irascible like Glenn Cessation in 101 Dalmatians & 102 Dalmatians, but she is malicious and has a gift for delivering swiftly one-liners. She is completely exquisite in her faulty slight role here.
This light fare is a surprisingly better film than I expected and it’s #1 opening at the box-office suggests that I’m not alone in that evaluation. Steal a fracture from the sex and violence currently splattering in our multiplex and go indulge in a film with your whole family that might travel you more than you might put a question to it to.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has had his stunning part of battles in the wrestling ring. He was also a fragment of the Miami Hurricanes football team. He combines the giant ego of “The Rock” in WWE and his football skills to produce Joe Kingman, a pro football player who’s got everything but a championship ring. He even has something that he doesn’t know he has–a daughter. On top of his game, his ego crashes hard when young Peyton (Madison Pettis) shows up at his front door. Never having any sort of responsibilities before, Kingman tries to juggle his football career, his high profile lifestyle and his novel daughter. All the while his agent, a devilishly humorous Kyra Sedgwick, tries to figure out if dinky Peyton is the trusty deal, or impartial another opportunist trying to gather her hands on a portion of the Kingman pie. Will Kingman obtain his priorities straight, or will he succumb to the like a flash and easy lifestyle his lived for so long?
Rosalyn Sanchez heads up a solid supporting cast of actors and actresses who you may not be familiar with (excepting Morris Chesnut, playing a solid father-figure teammate) . The sage is generic and highly unoriginal, but the solid performances of the entire cast and the wholesome, family-geared direction manufacture this anecdote more than genuine of four stars. Everybody, even the quasi-villain Sedgwick, is likeable. Johnson shows his singing chops that wrestling fans will already be familiar with. He also has that million-dollar smile that lights up the mask. Young Pettis steals most of her scenes, even though she could be accused of boosting the sugar pronounce a bit too great at times. Johnson’s teammates are also delicious to sight on the hide. Their chemistry with Johnson, each other and with young Pettis is spacious.
If you long for the days of sugary Disney live-action family features such as the novel “Herbie” films and “The Apple Dumpling Gang,” “The Game Belief” is a welcome treat. It’s a rare family comedy that the entire family will relish. Highly recommended.

The point of these DVD’s are the images of sacred sites – which are 5-star. The naration is forgetable.
I am quiet arriving aid from this unbelievable jog. The 3 dvds let filmmaker John Bush mutter this anecdote stir over 4.5 hours while visiting the most wonderful temples, villages, caves, mountains and rivers in so many different places in Asia. I was particularly moved by the Burma and Tibet segments as there is so considerable anguish there, while the people are so glowing and their cause is so unprejudiced.

These are not the usual talking heads type documentaries but more intuitive,spontaneous and revealing. We follow the camera into rare and seldom seen places and hear the legends and spiritual significance of each position. I was particularly impressed by the music which seemed very well well-behaved to each scene and added to the dramatic structure. David Hykes’ harmonic chants are hypnotic. There is a tall amount of the local music that is astonishing and which I have never heard before. Each dvd has two viewing choices – with a narrator and with honest music and sound. I peruse forward to this one.
While I know something about Buddhism I was relieved that the films do not have any sectarian biases – you do not have to be a Buddhist to “net” what John Bush is offering here. He presents it all in an informed but universal procedure that is quite captivating. There is something advantageous in seeing the grandeur and simplicity of these Asian venues dedicated to nothing but the discovery of wisdom & compassion.

The voiceover narration works blooming – I would have preferred to hear the people relate sometimes, but I guess it would have to be translated anyway.
All in all it is a considerable device to peruse so worthy of spiritual Asia in a short amount of time. I truly recommend this residence.

I saw this film for the first time at a friend’s house at Original Years Eve and can honestly say that this is the PERFECT movie for having a party or LAN meet (to all of you online gamers out there) . I’ve described it as “The best movie on the face of this earth when you’re half drunk” and I occupy that plan.
There’s no doubt that Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan are the stars of the display with their crazy antics and mental dancing (That head bobbing is helluva catchy amongst friends) . The storyline retains itself throughout and though it could be described as a “Typical American Epic” it’s done with such humour that, for me, it cannot fail.
The description on the shroud is that it’s “the dreary and dumber of disco” – Very grand analysis.

I’d like to say in closing, try the film out. It’s a amusing, feelgoood movie that everyone can have a ample laff at, and if you give it a reasonable chance I’m distinct you’ll really like it – then you’ll be like EMIIIIILLLLLIIIIIOOOOOOO! . 
I reflect this movie was the most hilarious I have seen in years. Even though it wasn’t very approved with a lot of critics, it had me in histerics. I feel Chris Kattan is the funniest in the movie and I beget him to be a very talented comedic entertainer! Will Ferrell was hilarious as well! The two of them together had me almost in tears, I was laughing so damn hard. It’s comical, because there are guys that are really like that in the clubs. You know, sitting around dancing with no rythum what so ever and trying to witness icy in front of all the ladies. So to stare this film was almost like being there. That is my thought anyway. I also loved the music they had in this movie. It was very fascinating! Well I feel I explained it all. This movie is a must eye! It definately will develop you laugh. I say expedient job to Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell, I looooovvvvvveeee you guys! I would definately peer another movie with Chris Kattan in it. What a amusing guy!

Scrubs zigzag me with the very first episode I ever saw. At first I was skeptical. Medical comedy, hmm Ok, there is going to be dreadful sophmoric humor and haven’t we seen medical shows about a million times? Five minutes in, it hit me. This present was actually brilliant; Smart, quirky, and sometimes wacky humor coupled with true drama and tearful emotion and writing that continues to amaze week after week. At that moment, Scrubs inherited the void left by Seinfeld’s departure as TVs best comedy.
The quirky nature of the writing, especially JD’s fantasy sequences, improves in Season 2. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are far better, and far more comfortable, in their respective roles as JD, Turk, and Elliot than in Season 1. John C. McGinley is bar none the best actor on TV today as Dr. Cox. He becomes a more understandable and likeable character as this season progresses. And of course, Neil Flynn and his fantastically offbeat humor as JD’s Janitor nemesis.

The season 1 finale left a lot of questions in the air. Would Carla and Turk decide their problems and gain happiness? Would JD and Elliot plunge in savor for loyal or are they destined for friendship? Most importantly, woud the father-son relationship between JD and Dr. Cox ever be the same? Season 2 resolves these questions fairly early, leaving the majority of the season devoted to pure laugh out loud moments and astonishing guest stars like Heather Locklear, Tom Cavanaugh, Rick Shroeder, Jay Mohr, and the delicate Amy Knowing as Tasty Coma Wife. The reveal seems to be successfully spellbinding away from the gimmicky area twists and each episode is a neatly comprehensive demonstrate. With shorter dramatic arcs, the humor and acting are center stage and the cast and crew sparkle. Once again, the special features are involving and informative without being too lengthy (perfect for my short attention span) . The best short doco is one which features many of the on-set jokes between cast and crew – you really score the feeling that these people don’t fair turn up and execute a sitcom for the money.
While it’s disappointing that there are only 22 episodes in season two, as opposed to the 24 from the first season, what is lost in quality is made up for in quantity. Once again we leer the janitor (my absolute favourite character) do his best to effect JD’s life hell, while getting choked up when JD gives him a unusual mop (of all things!) . Music also features heavily in these episodes, with the return of ‘Ted’s Band’ seeing a amazing rendition of the theme song from ‘Charles in Charge’. Check out the extras to examine these guys do their maintain special veil of the Scrubs theme song.
Even the menus are interesting – containing the entire Scrubs theme song, which is seriously catchy (sings) …but I know, I’m no Superman… (all suitable I’ll end now) . In the episodes themselves, the narrate is very distinct and the sound is tall too, and first-rate transfer from the source material. Considering the poor pattern in which these shows screened in Australia, it’s nice to be able to gape them in order as intended. Abominable Dr. Phibes: Brand gives a campy performance in one of the few dismay films which successfully and intentionally joins comedy and awe. Tales of Dread – Three stories adapted very loosely from the work of Edgar Allen Poe – “Morella”, “The Dark Cat” and “The (Facts in the) Case of M. Valdemar”, each roughly one half-hour in length.
Twice Told Tales – This is a compilation of three short films based on Nathaniel Hawthorne works – Heidegger’s Experiment, Rappaccini’s Daughter and The House of Seven Gables. In both this film and “Tales of Fright”, the opinion is not so worthy to be correct to the new epic, as it is to employ the foundation of the epic to the advantage of Cormen’s ability to acquire scary movies and in Price’s ability to star in them.
Theater of Blood: An engrossing panic film about a demented Shakespearean actor (Notice) who takes a bloody revenge against the eight theatre critics who gave his performances abominable reviews. Witchfinder General (aka Conqueror Worm) : In 17th-century England during the struggle between Cromwell and the Crown, Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Brand) and his associates survey out and persecute those concept to practice sorcery as well as anyone else who incurs their wrath. And as such, Twice Told Tales, Theater of Blood, and Madhouse are in letterbox format, not anamorphic. So if you already have these films, Dr. Phibes and Tales of Dread on DVD you only need to grasp Witchfinder General separately, you’ll earn nothing else novel here. Fox cleverly fails to vow the format of its DVDs by calling everything “widescreen” whether or not the films were processed in letterbox or anamorphic formats. Its a ample inequity for those of us with HDTVs. What an opportunity lost for remastering these panic classics.

Professional wrestling star the Rock, who was such a lump of flesh in The Scorpion King, proves surprisingly light on his feet in The Rundown, demonstrating charm and humor as well as the requisite toughness. Beck (the Rock), a repo-man for deadbeats, is sent to South America to find a treasure hunter (Seann William Scott) who’s seeking a priceless golden idol–which the local head honcho (Christopher Walken) would like to get his hands on as well. Add in the lovely but dangerous barmaid with a secret (Rosario Dawson), and Beck has some obstacles to overcome. The plot of The Rundown isn’t anything special, but the script is enjoyably clever and reasonably coherent; the capable cast keeps things lively; and the movie’s relaxed but sinewy pace sets it apart from the frantic floundering of recent action flicks–kudos to director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things). A surprisingly fun flick. –Bret Fetzer
